Two New Reviews for Giving Thanks!

Giving Thanks has been out a week and two generous reviewers have taken the time to read and review it already. Their opinions have really made my ugly week at the Evil Day Job better!

I hope you’ll take a look at not just the reviews for Giving Thanks but all the other great reviews offered on these two blogs.

Ebook Addict told me I wasn’t allowed to tell her husband she bought it, but named it both a Must Read and her Recommended Thanksgiving Read for 2008. She says (in part)…

I love holiday stories love, forgiveness and happily ever after, and this one surely didn’t disappoint me. This was my first book by Maura it won’t be my last!!

Derek and Troy will grab your heart from page one and you won’t want the story the story to end I kept putting the book down not because I didn’t like it but because I knew the end was near and just was not ready to let them go. The love that Derek and Troy have for each other is really going to give you that little knot in your throat. You will be crying, laughing, angry and HOT all in equal parts, It is a wonderful Thanksgiving story that I will be reading over and over and every Thanksgiving to come!!!!!!!!

I wish I could say more but it seems that everything I tell you would ruin the story for you and I don’t want to do that so please don’t miss out on your chance to buy this great story I promise you won’t be sorry.

You can read the entire review (and others) on Ebook Addict’s blog.

Wave from Reviews by JesseWave managed to somehow sneak in a read of Giving Thanks around her bulging shelves of TBR and gave it 4.5 stars out of 5. She says (in part)…

This is Maura Anderson’s first M/M story and I think it was a very good debut for her in a different genre. The characters were well developed and three dimensional and the author didn’t shy away from the intimate sex scenes which were warm and loving in addition to being very hot. The author obviously has a lot of experience, due to her many het romance books, in making sure that her protagonists are real. This is the first book that I have read from Ms Anderson and I was impressed. Giving Thanks is a “feel good” story - it’s about Thanksgiving after all, but the author didn’t just phone in the story - she took the time to introduce some complexities into it and gave us a picture of a loving family headed up by a very strong mother who dealt quite effectively with a bigoted husband that was still living in an era where being gay was reprehensible.

The story was funny and heartwarming and filled with lots of delicious food. I could feel the aromas wafting into the book - either this author really loves food or she’s trying to make gluttons of her readers. I hope that this is not Ms Anderson’s only venture into the M/M genre because she seems to have an instinctive touch for creating gay male characters that are real and not caricatures. I recommend that you buy this book as a great start to the Thanksgiving holiday. My only regret was that I could not live in Troy’s and Derek’s world a little longer.

Blurb:
It’s another Thanksgiving for lovers Derek and Troy. Another holiday to pretend they are merely platonic roommates in the chaos of Derek’s family celebration. When Derek snaps after one too many confrontations and admits he’s gay, his father disowns him on the spot. It’s going to be a quiet Thanksgiving…or is it?

Excerpt:
Troy turned down the street, bone-deep exhaustion warring with anticipation. Tired as he was, doing a double-shift before Thanksgiving was worth it so he and Derek could have two days free together. Thanksgiving was for Derek’s family, and the day after for just the two of them. Even after two years as a couple, he still couldn’t believe how happy he was. How eager to come home to Derek. How thankful he was they’d found each other.

He saw Derek’s Toyota in the driveway as he caught sight of the house. Derek shouldn’t be home. He’d been scheduled to work at his family’s restaurant until early evening, and that was still hours away. Derek’s schedule had never run unexpectedly early.

His stomach clenched. He had a bad feeling about this. A very bad feeling.

As soon as he’d parked, he grabbed his duffle bag and hopped out, barely tugging his coat from the car before the door shut. He trotted up the walkway to the front porch. Gut still roiling, he paused for a long deep breath then slowly opened the door, unsure of just what he would find. He was sure it wouldn’t be good.

He heard a loud clatter from the direction of the kitchen, followed by a snarled curse. Oh yeah, not good at all. Nothing in the kitchen ever fazed Derek, not even the time they’d gotten too distracted by the recreational uses of clarified butter and their dinner had caught on fire. Troy had been the one who’d almost fallen over when he rushed to get the fire extinguisher from the pantry, forgetting his pants were around his ankles. Derek laughed hysterically at Troy ’s shuffling hop, but still managed to put out the fire with a pan lid and even retained the presence of mind to silence the smoke detectors before a neighbor called the fire department.

It had taken him three tries to get the oily spots out of his favorite jeans, and to this day Derek persisted in cracking jokes about the perils of buttering him up. At least he hadn’t hurt himself and had to explain that to his co-workers.

He quietly set down his duffle bag near the stairs, took off his coat and hung it and his keys on their respective hooks. It only took a moment to sit on the wrought iron bench to take off his work boots and set them next to Derek’s chef’s clogs before padding toward the kitchen.

“Derek?”

The kitchen island had several grocery store bags on it. Why had Derek gone shopping when they were eating at Derek’s parents’ house tomorrow and would have leftovers enough for a week?

Turning the corner, he spotted Derek standing in front of the large stainless steel double sinks. He was still dressed for work in his white chef’s coat and a pair of his tacky baggy pants—this pair with brightly printed chili peppers on them. A big clear plastic tub sat on the floor near his feet, half-full of some liquid, and he seemed to be vigorously washing a rather large turkey with the spray nozzle.

“Derek?”

Still no response and the sick feeling in the pit of Troy’s stomach only got worse. He walked over to Derek and ran his hands up his lover’s back, slowly and firmly. Then back down Derek’s sides and around his waist.

Tense. So tense. Derek felt almost brittle to the touch. Not something he was used to feeling in his lover.

“What’s wrong, Derek? Why are you home already?”

No answer. He just continued to scrub at the poor abused turkey. Then Troy heard a telltale catch in his breath. A sob. Derek never cried; he just got angry and yelled a bit. What the hell had happened?

Troy reached over and shut off the water, then coaxed Derek to release the very clean turkey and the sprayer. His lover grasped the edge of the sink so tightly his knuckles were white through the thin latex gloves he was wearing. Tiny, not quite stifled sobs shook his body. “I’m here for you, love. What’s wrong? What happened?”

Troy rested his cheek briefly on Derek’s back, then pulled Derek’s wet hands off the sink and overcame his token resistance to turn him around. Troy caught sight of his face. “What the fuck! Who did this?”

Rage burned through Troy at the sight of the bandage below Derek’s right eye and the bruise that was blooming around it, the skin swollen and a dusky purple. “What happened, Derek? Tell me what happened.”

The Really Scary List

In an effort to get organized and plan out my writing time and deliverables, I foolishly started a list of all the stories either contracted, requested by editors/publishers or begged for by readers.

STUPID Maura.

I really didn’t think the list was so big - nor so intimidating. I’m actually scared when I look at it.

  1. Bittersweet (m/m)
  2. Menage a Trois (Del Fantasma, menage)
  3. Firestorm (Del Fantasma)
  4. Skin Deep (CLAW)
  5. Take Me (Coyote Clans)
  6. Small Town Vet (m/m)
  7. Hidden Depths Series - Secret Graves (m/m)
  8. Music of the Heart (Bran’s Visions, m/m)
  9. Rhythm of the Ancestors (Bran’s Visions, m/m)
  10. Eyes of Jade (Samhain Born)
  11. Life Lines (BDSM, m/m)
  12. Patterns
  13. Right on Time
  14. Calling for a Ride
  15. Lord of Storms
  16. Breathe
  17. Not a Fairy

That’s just so far. And with the Friday Flash and the Maniacal Muse, I get more ideas every day.

A drink. I must need a drink. Then I have to try to put this list in order and budget some time. *laughs hysterically*. Yah…. My thoughts, too.

Giving Thanks is DONE!

Turned it over to test readers and my editor(s) last night. Usually I do a round of test reads before it goes to the editor but I’m late and my editor is most likely debating severe bodily harm. I can still integrate test reader feedback into the edits I get from her, so I’m hoping it will all be good.

The story topped out at 11,344 words, I’d originally estimated it at 8k. Oops.

Here’s a short excerpt (behind the cut because it’s ADULT)

Tort & Retort is OUT

Tort & Retort

Buy it now from Aspen Mountain Press!

Blurb:
Ambitious and driven patent law attorney, Gayle Osborne, has a secret. Her power suits and take-no-prisoners attitude hide a passionate nature whose only outlet is reading and reviewing erotic romance. If anyone finds out that she is “Miss Retort,” the snarky and opinionated blogger from the Hits & Misses review blog, she’ll lose everything—her reputation, her clients, her job and, worst of all, her gorgeous mentor and boss, Tyler Monroe.

Excerpt:
“You want to do what?”

Gayle Osborne’s voice rang out through the coffee shop, causing the scattering of other patrons to turn and look toward her. Cringing, she tried in vain to become invisible. More attention was not something she really wanted.

She loved the normal weekly gathering of their little group—a relaxing Saturday morning spent with designer coffee and the latest offerings in the world of print and e-book erotic romance. A far cry from her buttoned up and formal world of patent law, it fed a hidden side of her. The same side that wanted to do things like fuck Tyler Morgan—her gorgeous mentor and boss.

Only a moment of insanity could have caused her to agree to this hurried weekday lunch meeting instead of trying to get some work done and watching Tyler from afar. Insanity, or just too much nagging from her friends. Gayle took a sip of her water and glanced around. Thank heaven the other customers seemed to have lost interest already.

The past year had been a rollercoaster of emotions between her growing lust for Tyler , and her need to remain competent and professional. Lately she’d needed to remind herself daily that no amount of sexual satisfaction was worth losing her career over.

But a collaborative erotic romance review blog?

Sure, they all exchanged reviews on the group email list about their latest page-turners. They warned each other about new wallbangers. They commiserated over the lack of honest and forthright reviews from other people, and the resulting necessity of sorting the gems from the duds themselves. But that was just among a small group of friends who shared a common interest, and a far cry from standing up and virtually shouting from a public blog.

She tried to imagine just what the reaction of her family, her mentor, or her clients would be if they did a web search on her name and found that. She shuddered at the very thought.

“Gayle, what’s the big deal? It’s not like we’re not already doing most of this. Hell, the more structured aspect of it should appeal to you.” Kelly looked exhausted and chugged down more of her second triple mocha of the morning. The woman could use her own caffeine IV lately.

Gayle bristled at the amusement in her best friend’s tired voice. “I’m not afraid of more work or imposing some organization.”

Anne laughed and sat back down next to Kelly. “This coming from the woman who has her entire e-book collection organized by genre, author and title, and then cross-referenced in a spreadsheet by publisher and series. Of course she’s not afraid of organization.”

Gayle rolled her eyes at the familiar jab. “The amount of work involved has nothing to do with it. There’s just no way I’m going to do anything that might threaten my career. It’s taken me years to get here and I’m not going to screw that up.”

“I’m a patent attorney who works with software engineers. Can you imagine what would happen if they found out I read romances, let alone erotic romances? They already hit on me and that would just make things ten times worse. Just the hint of anything erotic connected to me would make my credibility plummet instantly to the level of a slutty brainless twit.”

Kelly chuckled. “And you wouldn’t want to let on that you have a side that’s not cast iron and welded into a power suit. No one can know that you might be as human and as vulnerable as everyone else.”

Gayle sighed in exasperation. Her friends seemed determined to talk her around. “Like I’m going to advertise to my boss that at lunch today I’ll be reading a book called ‘Anus of Eros’ or ‘WigglyJiggly’ and expect the man to still think I can do my job and more?”

The very thought of Tyler giving her his patented “bimbo kiss-off” look made her stomach churn. In the time she’d worked for him, he’d gone through numerous girlfriends and each brief relationship had ended with that look. The huge crush she had on her boss, and his frequent starring role in her fantasies, made her all the more determined that he never turn that look on her.

She was lucky to not have a morality clause in her contract, but what if she lost some of their clients by doing this?

She took a sip of her rich, sweet mocha brevé. “And some of the author names sound like really bad porn star names. I mean, really, why would anyone actually admit they write as ‘Savannah Stars,’ ‘Tawny Strokes’ or ‘Thorny Rose’? If some of them didn’t write decent stories, I’d swear they were really men, in addition to having bad taste in pen names.”

“See, that kind of comment is exactly why we should do this.” Obviously excited, Anne latched onto Gayle’s objections. “We all want to see the quality and reputation of the genre improve. How better than to have a voice and help the changes along?”

Gayle could see by the stubborn looks on the faces of her friends that she was the only one who was not sure about this grand new plan. “Maybe I can just help out with the website? I’m pretty decent with HTML.”

“Not a chance, Gayle. Not when you’re the one who does the best job on the really tough reviews. You’re great at figuring out why something does or doesn’t work.” Renee chimed in from across the table.

Gayle made a final, valiant escape attempt. “I can’t do anything to impact my career or my professional relationships. I deal with a lot of very opinionated and curious geeks, and they’re sure to Google my name.”

“We’ve thought of that.” Kelly smirked and seemed far too pleased with herself for Gayle’s peace of mind. “I don’t really want my name out there either. Somehow I think most parents wouldn’t react too well to discovering their child’s pediatrician is an erotic romance reviewer.”

Gayle waited, almost patiently, for Kelly to get around to dropping the other shoe.

“Just like some authors, we’ll all use pseudonyms. That way we’re basically anonymous unless we choose to tell someone who we are. It’s perfect.”

It took effort to stifle the urge to toss her now empty coffee cup at Kelly’s smirking face. Instead she sighed and rolled her eyes. “If we do this, we need to agree that we can only out ourselves, no one can reveal anyone else’s real name.”

Renee immediately leaned over the table and stuck her hand out, pinky extended. “Pinkie Swear.”

They each repeated the childhood ritual of the pinkie swear as their non-disclosure agreement. After a brief break to refresh their coffee and snack supply, they ironed out the details of just how to set up and manage the blog and who would be responsible for what tasks.

She was thankful that one of the decisions was to not have another weekday lunch meeting over all this—it really did play hell with her carefully orchestrated work schedule. Staring down at her half-eaten biscotti, she mentally reviewed her schedule for today. She checked her watch and panicked. If she didn’t leave now, she might be late for her meeting with the luscious Tyler .
